Nations Of Gwentfinity August 2024 – Has Russia Conquered Ladder?

Introduction

In August 2024 we are almost one year into Gwentfinity. During this time 11 community voting driven Gwent: The Witcher Card Game patches happened.

In April 2024 the last article from Nations of Gwent cycle was published. We witnessed there rapid growth of % of ‘CIS’ players. Especially Russian rise was spectacular, reaching 35% of total number of players in February.

Since then 5 Gwentfinity seasons passed (April – August). Is the trend continuous? Let’s check out.

Provided stats are based on Top2860 players of Pro Ladder data – biggest sample size available via Gwent Masters Ratings.

Then And Now

(Nov 2022 / Sep 2023 removed for clarity)

The number of Russian players dropped by 10%, Ukrainian by 3.2%, Belarus by 0.7%. That’s probably the first cause which have lead to uniform growth of representation of other nations. The highest relative growth happened for Japan – from 2.3% to 3.8%.

Highlighted Countries

Russia

It seems clear now that the beginning of 2024 was all-time Gwent highest in Russian community. The trend didn’t stick and after February peak the % of players gradually returned to normal level. Still almost 1/4 of players on Gwent Pro Ladder is Russian.

China

China fills void left by Russia.

Ukraine

As can be seen in the graphs, Ukrainian trends are very similar to Russian, but smaller scale. In reference to the past, Ukraine plunge is even bigger than Russian; 6.0% in August 2024 is the lowest level since Masters 2, while Russia is still above most of Masters 5.

Japan

After Russian peak deceased, the relative popularity of Gwent in most non-‘CIS’ countries grew, but in the case of Japan it looks like something more. In August 2024 the % of Japanese players is the highest in Gwent history, with World Champion Mya-Mon and t_imagawa being some notable figures.

Regions

For the sake of clustered statistics following Regions would be distinguished:

  • ‘CIS’ – name loosely refers to the countries of the former Commonwealth Of Indpendent States; it includes Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan…
  • ‘Europe’ – European countries to the west of CIS, mostly using latin alphabet: Poland, Germany, France, Great Britain, Czech Republic…
  • ‘East Asia’ – Asian countries to the east from India: China, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand…
  • ‘North America’ – includes also Central America with Mexico; United States, Canada…
  • ‘South America’ – Brazil, Argentina…
  • ‘West Asia’ – Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia… also Egypt is included in this group although equally well may be counted as an African country (like it is in football for example)
  • ‘Oceania’ – Australia, New Zealand…
  • ‘South Asia’ – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh…
  • ‘Africa’ – South Africa, Algieria, Morocco…

‘CIS’ impact dropped from 50% to about 33% in 5 months, but still that’s the main region.
